Renewed Framework Mental Mathematics Assessments

The mental maths assessments have been designed by teachers for Year 2 to Year 6 to match the blocks and units of the Renewed Framework for mathematics.

The assessments are designed to be used at the end of each block to test the mental skills of the children in a class or group. The content of each test matches the content and difficulty level of the appropriate block and unit.

There are 15 assessments for each year group to match each block and unit of the Renewed Framework. The assessments are in spoken form on audio CD and are supplied with a book containing a transcript of the

questions, a photocopiable child’s answer sheet for each test and an answer sheet for each test. A class record sheet is also provided where children’s progress can be tracked.

Each assessment contains 20 questions and they are designed following the format of the end of Key Stage 2 mental maths test.

There are 5 second, 10 second and 15 second questions; the difficulty level increases throughout each test, although some of the more challenging questions are knowledge-based and therefore can still be accessed by less able children.

The results of the tests can be used to provide vital evidence when a teacher is making a judgement on a child’s level when implementing the Assessing Pupils’ Progress Strategy. Discussion of methods and investigation into different strategies used can also provide very useful information to help determine a child’s maths level and, crucially, highlight the next steps for effective learning.

Analyses of results can also be used to highlight individual, group or class strengths and weaknesses so that future mathematics planning can be adjusted accordingly and meaningful targets can be set. This diagnostic analysis provides vital information that a school can use to take children’s learning forward.  This forms part of an effective Assessment for Learning Strategy, signposting the way forward for teachers and learners.

Many children find completing a mental assessment very challenging due to the pressure of time limits. These assessments are designed to provide vital practice thus enhancing children’s skills and confidence in mental maths. They also provide a platform for discussion and investigation into strategies for mental maths and problem solving.

The book and 3 CDs for each year group are available for just £25 per year group. As colleagues, we believe there is no comparison on the market in terms of quality and value.
